more SMC-IT

I've gotten behind in my updates from SMC-IT. Rest assured, it's a great conference, and I plan to catch up.

Knowledge Management

I skipped some of the more arcane Deep Space Communications talks on Tuesday in favor of the Collaboration and Knowledge Management track. It was as though I'd slipped into another conference entirely. I listened to a talk about the 'virtual human' developed for army soldier virtual training environments. Another talk gave an overview of the field of 'knowledge management', characterized as a spectrum from tech-oriented areas like artificial intelligence to people-oriented areas like organization. Whereas up until recently artificial intelligence work dominated, now collaboration is the hot field. The speaker advocated finding ways to develop people with expertise across the spectrum of knowledge management so they can integrate its too-isolated sub-fields.

Agoric Architecture

I was fascinated by a talk on Agoric Architectural Styles for Space Exploration. The speaker has a background in economics and brought some ideas about how the wisdom of the free market could help with allocating limited resources like spacecraft CPU cycles, memory usage, and Deep Space Network scheduling.

Vint Cerf's Keynote

Father-of-the-Internet Vint Cerf was one of the keynote speakers on Wednesday morning. I think it's great that such an illustrious figure is "on our side" in pushing for an interplanetary internet. I have to admit that what impressed me the most about his appearance was his shunning of the use of slides—“Power corrupts; PowerPoint corrupts absolutely.”

"Power Corrupts, PowerPoint corrupts absolutely."

Is this an actual quotation from Vint Cerf? Because I totally want to steal it.
