Flowing Sōmen

I was just listening to an audio post on a learning-Japanese podcast I subscribe to, and the topic sounds so fun that I want to share it. The post is about Nagashi Sōmen, or Flowing Sōmen, which is a way of serving and eating cold sōmen noodles in the summertime. The idea is that, either in a restaurant or outdoors (along with a barbeque, say), a water flume made of bamboo is set up, and the noodles flow past diners waiting to catch them with their chopsticks and dip them in a cup of sauce before eating. 楽しそうね! I've had conveyor-belt sushi before, but this is another level of fun with food!

(It appears one can buy a tabletop noodle circulator for a more convenient at-home nagashi sōmen experience. Or build one for your Lego figures.)

That is pretty cool. Wish I had seen one of them when I was in Japan - I absolutely love somen in the summertime.

I can't imagine I'd ever use my own tabletop noodle circulator, but it'd be fun to say I owned. Sounds pretty weird, even if you know what it is.

I just found your journal through Harvestar's account.

Thanks for all the links and information on flowing somen! My family and I have gone to conveyor belt (or rotating) sushi restaurants before. I find those interesting and fun. I think I heard about flowing somen before, but don't know much about them. It sounds like another interesting way of eating.

I've never heard of conveyor belt sushi or flowing somen, how delightful!
