For a few weeks now, I've been using Google Reader instead of FeedOnFeeds-Redux as my feed aggregator. I'm nominally a developer of FeedOnFeeds-Redux, though I haven't contributed in a while, and my installation of it was feeling pretty clunky. I hadn't realized how much clunkiness I'd been accustomed to until I tried Google Reader. My only complaint so far about Google Reader is its failure to work with HTTP Digest Auth, which I'd need to see my friends' protected LiveJournal posts. LiveJournal Feed Fetcher would be a workaround, but I'm leery of an accidental breech of my friends' privacy if I use a third-party proxy like that.

After a tiring day of skiing and snowtubing on Friday, my co-workers and I stopped at a Cracker Barrel for dinner. I mention this because of an unlisted item I learned of and enjoyed: a molasses milkshake. I like molasses, and I wish more foods included it. Usually I only get to enjoy the flavor in my mom's gingerbread cookies around the winter holidays. So I recommend the molasses milkshake. For the curious, this Consumer article lists secret menu items for other chain eateries.

As long as I'm recommending things, here are various things I like:

  • radio show and podcast Radio Lab
  • bamboo fabric; I have a hoodie made of bamboo fabric and it's just awesome: soft, lightweight, stain-resistant (in my experience), moisture-wicking, and easy to launder
  • nonstick aluminum foil; I use it to line my baking sheets anytime I put something in the oven, and I've never had to scrub a baking sheet since
  • Tide To Go instant stain remover marker; I keep one in my satchel, and it has come in handy many a time

On Feed Readers: I started having issues with FOF-redux in October. Essentially, I could only pull in updates once a day it seemed. I couldn't figure out the problem and I couldn't get any help in the forum. So I tried other readers (the original FOF since development picked up again and rnews but I can't stand its interface) and have the same issues with all of them. They all update... eventually. But they only seem to update sometime between 10pm and 3am even if there are new items on the feeds to bring in. My cron jobs aren't failing- but I can't even update with the regular update when the new items are there- and I don't see anything that looks like errors in the logs. I couldn't get help on the FOF forum either. And I didn't want help with rnews because I didn't like it enough.

Then I found Gregarius recently and now my rss updates are all sparkley ponies and puppy kisses again. The only thing I can think of is perhaps there was a change on my domain host that is blocking something and I am too php illiterate to figure it out since all the other readers I tried work off of php and Gregarius is Apache/ Ajax. The only issue I have noticed with Gregarius is it does not pull in pictures on some feeds that FOF and FOF-redux would (this is annoying on I Can Haz Cheezburger since it is all about the pictures). I can't figure out why, but when I look at the feed for the page in a web browser, the pictures aren't there. I think it has to do with how in Gregarius you have to specifically allow certain tags... I just have to figure out which one is missing. But, I have been so happy that my feeds update during the day that I haven't looked into it yet!

On bamboo fabric: I have two sets on bamboo sheets I got really cheap at Target. They are great!

On foil: You should really check out all the uses for parchement paper.

I so hate Google Reader. It leaches images in the most obscene way. Now I could understand it if some third-rate webservice did it, but Google should be perfectly capable of caching what it needs. I am not yet at a point of blocking Google Reader, but it's getting there.

foil: I used to love foil for exactly the same reason, but I tried out those silicone sheets & I'm a convert now because they're reusable. I like them for kneading dough or rolling out pie crusts on too!

I'll have to check out those silicone sheets. Are they fairly non-stick? Do you apply cooking spray when you use them?

They're quite non-stick, so i don't bother with any cooking spray or anything. Plus, it's just a flexible sheet, so even if things were sticking a bit, it's relatively easy to peel them off. (Sadly, this doesn't work quite as perfectly with my silicone mini-cupcake things. I can peel the cupcakes out without *too* much difficulty, but I think a bit of cooking spray might go a long way there.)
