so much for being original

I recently discovered instantiations of two things I'd thought of independently but not yet done anything about.

One is a Pioneer plaque tattoo. I don't intend to get a tattoo in the foreseeable future, mind you. But if I did, I had the idea that it would include some subset of the diagrams on the Pioneer plaque—say, the hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen and the relative position of the sun to the center of the Galaxy and 14 pulsars, which also appear on the cover of the Voyager Golden Record.

The other is LED constellation embroidery. I've been vaguely considering holding a workshop at HacDC on making them; I just haven't had the time for the necessary prep work.

I approve highly of both these ideas, even if they aren't original. I also approve of the word "instantiations."

If you make the LED embroidery, however, don't wear it to the airport, like a bright-but-not-smart MIT student did a couple of years ago. She had some kind of class project attached to her coat, with batteries and wires sticking out. The FBI had her surrounded with machine guns in about three minutes.
