We Don't Care. We Don't Have To.

I don't understand how it is that my local phone company can charge me ten dollars for changing my long-distance and in-state carrier (from GTC to ECG). Does that make sense to anyone? The change had nothing to do with them, as far as I can tell.

Even in this era of telecom deregulation, it's still true: “We don't care. We don't have to. We're the phone company.”

there are obviously processing fees to shut down your own account. I actually think there is a legitimate regulatory reporting fee to transfer carriers (when I dropped all long distance at my old place, I had to pay such a charge because there's a filed regulatory listing with some state or probably federal agency) though.
