opening a time capsule

When I was up in my attic gathering yuletide decorations, I found a plastic bag with a barely-started 30" x 51" (76cm x 130cm) latch-hook rug pattern and some papers inside. It had belonged to my late grandmother and been passed on to me by my parents, who knew I make latch-hook things from time to time.

(I'd stumbled on to latch-hookery when I took an elective class called Hobbies in the sixth grade. The whole point of the class was to spend the period engaging in some quiet hobby. Tough school, eh? :) Somehow latch-hookery struck me as a conveniently skill-free undertaking.)

The papers inside the bag provided some interesting documentation. Along with a receipt for the rug pattern and a bunch of pre-cut wool yarn (the latter unfortunately lost to time), there was a typewritten letter dated December 1, 1969, from a Pittsburgh dry goods merchant to my grandmother, confirming shipment of some wool yarn and noting that one of their rug patterns was out of stock. The rug pattern I now have, Bernat's Bokhara, is a different one by the same designer, maybe my grandmother's second choice; I presume its lone row of hooked yarn couldn't have been completed before 1970.

Fortunately, among the papers is a run-down of how much yarn in each color is needed for the pattern, so I went to a local crafts store and picked up an armload of (synthetic) yarn. I'm now ready to resume making the rug, thirty years later.

Whoa, time capsule indeed! I got introduced to latch-hookery through my Gran more than 20 years ago - I loved it as a kid. Thank you for sharing!
