omnibus update

I'm busy getting ready for our World Cup trip. Thanks to elwing2000 for the power adapters and French phrase book. At my tea ceremony lesson on Saturday, I got to squeeze in two sessions to partially make up for the two classes I'll miss while I'm overseas, though the fact that a classmate and our instructor each just returned from Europe (Greece and Italy, respectively) with colds makes me wonder if I should be packing Vitamin C... On my way to class I stopped by a used book store to pick up some editions of an out-of-print tea ceremony journal, but before I knew it I had an armload of must-read books to add to my queue: Dogs and Demons: Tales from the Dark Side of Japan, The Secrets of Mariko: A Year in the Life of a Japanese Woman and Her Family, Forgotten Scripts: Their Ongoing Discovery and Decipherment, Language in Thought and Action, and The Atoms of Language: The Mind's Hidden Rules of Grammar.

Feeds I recently started following: Ask a Ninja, The Daily WTF.

Last night was my first Japanese class of the summer, in downtown DC. It's "Elementary 2" level, meaning we'll be learning katakana (although I already know it pretty well), vocabulary, and grammar along the lines of the ている form of verbs. So far taking the metro downtown during evening rush hour isn't so bad.

Butterstick is growing older but no less cute. You must see this picture of him.

You know those plastic water vials that come on the ends of cut flowers? I can't help but think they must be good for something. But what? Any ideas?

I'm pleased with my progress in getting into real open source software projects. As a newly-appointed admin of bstamp (for programming the BASIC Stamp microcontroller), I'm proud to have put out a new release several days ago. On fofredux (the server-side feed aggregator), I'm working on some of the georss/mapping functionality, but I'm having some frustrating problems with DOMParser. I'm just getting into the development sides of bside (BASIC Stamp IDE) and GotPlans (a social event calendar). Depending on how progress on nabazclapier goes, I may find myself helping with that. But I doubt I'll be doing much hacking over the next couple of weeks.

"Dogs and Demons" is on my to-read list too; you'll have to let me know what you think of it!

If you are up for a beer some tuesday after class, let me know. Tuesday is beer night in my world. We are on a roaming schedule at the moment.

I am so jealous you got to go to see the USA play at the World Cup! How awesome. I can't wait to further check out your pictures and swing by to see what's going on over here.

Also, are you taking Japanese at the USDA? I took Spanish down there several years ago. I am just curious. Those were the days. :] I miss that place -- DC.

The Japanese classes I'm taking are at the Japan-American Society of Washington, DC. I've checked out the USDA classes, though, and I hear they're good, so I'll keep an eye on their schedule.
