my first bento

Today I made my very first bento lunch ever!

Top tier: dumplings with a fishie full of sauce, roasted chestnuts
Bottom tier: rice topped with seaweed seasoning
In the pink container: daikon slices with rice vinegar and toasted sesame seeds
On the lid: maple-leaf manju

Everything tasted fine overall; the dumplings and manju—fruits of a recent visit to a big, new-to-me Asian market—were especially tasty. I like how self-contained and seasonal the chestnuts are. I haven't cooked a lot of rice before, and this was a new bag of Sho-Chiku-Bai®, but I have to say: it's really sticky! Also, a whole bento box tier full of rice is just too much for me; next time, I'll make a couple little onigiri and leave it at that. The daikon slices tasted bland, so next time I think I'll include some spicy dipping sauce for them, or something.

I bet gyoza dipping sauce is good on daikon slices. (At least, I think it's good on pretty much everything.)
