We eat so well when Mara comes to visit. On Tuesday night she made us an anniversary dinner of a hot salad with various greens, toasted walnuts, bacon, bleu cheese, and a balsamic vinaigrette; roasted tomatoes filled with potato risotto; and sautéed scallops with grapefruit. I made fudge for dessert. What a meal.

The night before that thedreadpilot stopped on his way home from work to pick up Chincoteague oysters, cream of crab soup, crabcakes, and a fresh loaf of French bread. Mara ate her oysters raw, and I steamed the rest. No hepatitis yet! :D We did find some kind of parasite in a steamed oyster that I opened; it was a crawly reddish thing that Mara examined later. I'll try to get a copy of the pictures of it from her digicam.

I also made a pitcher of Bloody Marys using a recipe I saw in the Post. Tomato juice, vodka, lemon juice, wasabi powder, worcestershire sauce, horseradish, celery seed, et cetera. For me, it was spicy enough without hot sauce. As Mara says, a Bloody Mary is like a meal in a glass, but not the same way that a Guinness is. :) I especially liked the coating of kosher salt and Old Bay seasoning around the rims of our glasses.

I got my first—and the first—issue of Make yesterday, and what should be in it but an article by Bruce Sterling on flintknapping, a class on which Mara has been taking and filling us in. As an anthropologist, she replicates the lithic processes of early peoples to test theories about how they made their tools. She wasn't terribly impressed by the article, which makes “conchoidal fracture,” a very basic term—indeed, the basis of flintknapping—sound like cutting-edge (oh, sorry) flint haXX0r1ng jargon. What is it with science fiction authors riffing on subjects they don't know anything about other than that they're cool?

Wow, that's quite a bloody mary! I might have to try it sometime, with some of my more adventurous friends.
