The Long Run, landscaping, Cat Soup

This week, in a word: “eh.”

My car's battery died. thedreadpilot replaced it for me, making a trip out to work on his day off to pick up the tools he needed.

I bought a bunch of plants for the deck and the kitchen, but I didn't have time to plant them when it was nice out; now it's cool and rainy. I was getting used to the warm weather, too.

I've started reading the first runner-up from that book poll: The Long Run: A Tale of the Continuing Time (recommended by thewronghands). It's cyberpunk, set ~2069; our hero is a genetically-engineered thief trying to outwit the United Nations Peace-Keeping Forces in Occupied America. (In a touch of right-winger's-nightmare, the French lead the occupation.) Cars drive themselves, spacescrapers have replaced skyscrapers, obesity is obsolete, and surveillance is everywhere. It isn't an oppressive dystopian world, though—just one that requires a little creativity. I could easily see this book turned into a thriller movie.

I'm taking a landscaping class from the community college with the goal of landscaping our 20' x 40' backyard. Radically. No more monolithic expanse of grass. No more ad libitum pond. No more flower bulbs planted admist the grass. No more swamp under the deck. I took some pictures for class to show different views of the yard. I made a scale drawing. I paged through my four (!) landscaping books and marked things I liked. I foresee replacing much of the grass with planting beds and either brick or stone walkways. I'd install a semi-raised rectangular pond in there somewhere. I'd love to grow some moss somewhere, too.

We watched the short animated film Cat Soup the other day. Don't let the cuteness of the kittens fool you—this thing is DISTURBING. thedreadpilot describes it as “Fantasia with drugs. A LOT of drugs.” I've got to watch it again.

I'll be interested to see what you think of it as you continue to read. That one's definitely the most solid cyberpunk of the genre; books two and three get a little weirder, more sci-fi. Go you with the landscaping; that's really cool. I've just gotten indoor plants, and I thought I was badass because of that. [grin]

I wish you lots of luck with your lanscaping class! Have you stumbled upon any interesting ideas for container gardens? Our back yard of sorts is a
concrete pad with fencing.

If you ever need assistance for a major backyard overhaul just give me some warning I would love to help. I miss having a yard. :(
