wanted: unwanted toaster

Do you have a disused toaster laying around? If so, chances are I could use it for an electronics project I want to try.

Only one style of toaster will work for this project. Here's the test: push the handle down with the toaster unplugged. If it stays down, you have the wrong kind of toaster—an electromagnetic toaster (the kind I want) will pop back up immediately if no power is flowing to the magnet. It doesn't matter whether the heating elements or any other parts of the toaster works or how it looks, as long as it has a handle that pops up.

What I plan to do with the electromagnetic pop-up mechanism is use it to make a teabag timer that holds a teabag attached to the handle; in the down position, it's in the hot water steeping, and when the time is up, it pulls the teabag out of the perfectly-brewed tea. Perfect for the absent-minded tea drinker!

One of these toasters can be bought at Wal-Mart for less than the cost to ship it.

I was thinking that a visit to a thrift shop might supply just such a toaster with only a little experimentation.

My first choice would be a toaster that otherwise wouldn't be used, which I wouldn't expect to apply to an appliance I'd find in a thrift store. That's why I've posted here first; if I don't find one through this medium, I'll try to find a thrift store that's not too far away.

I make it a point of avoiding Wal-mart.

Also, a fair proportion of the people who read this are in my area or, if not, people I expect to see anyway in the next several months. I'm thinking that if I get lucky, no shipping cost will be involved.

We have one like that in my office. The handle doesn't stay down when you push it down, but that's because it's broken. =P

that's the best idea, ever.

I can't take credit for it; I found it in Make magazine.

I will check my extra toaster at home. It's almost certainly electromagnetic, since you have to push a button to get it to pop up prematurely. It's more a matter of finding it than anything else. :)

If I find it and it's compatible, I will get back to you to see if you still want it / get your address.

I think I've found a suitable one, but thank you for checking!
